Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight, which won the Oscar for Best Picture on Sunday, was a notable winner even beyond the bizarre circumstances of the announcement of its victory. It’s both the first LGBT-focused film and the first movie with an all-African-American cast to take Best Picture. And on top of that, it won the award with a mostly unknown cast and a director whose only previous credit was eight years earlier.

There’s another thing about Moonlight that differs from most films that win Best Picture: It was not a box office hit. In fact, with $22 million in earnings to date, it was the lowest-grossing of the nine Best Picture nominees this year, and the ...

First Official Look at Ego the Living Planet’s Human Form #movienews

Kurt Russell in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 - First Look

2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy ended with a slight cliffhanger when it came to the backstories of a few characters. The ragtag team had come together for the greater good, and found new purpose in protecting those who cannot protect themselves. Gamora is no longer the assassin of Thanos; Rocket and Groot aren’t just in it for the money, Drax now wants to kill Thanos, and Peter Quill a.k.a. Star-Lord discovers that he’s the descendant of some ancient mysterious race on his father’s side.

It didn’t take long for James Gunn, who’s back writing and directing the sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, to confirm that Star-Lord’s father would be very different than who it is in Marvel Comics. Instead of J’Son of Spartax being his dad, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is making Ego the Living Planet – an extremely different character – the father of Quill.

Ego is played by ...

Justice League Henry Cavill Green Lantern

The nearly constant stream of rumors, speculation, and entertaining fan theories surrounding the Justice League and Green Lanterns of the DC Extended Universe is hard to ignore, and even harder to resist getting swept into. And that doesn’t just go for the fans, either. As the rumor mill of whether or not Justice League will debut the new live action Green Lantern – and which version it should be – continues to heat up, the only other absent member of the DC super-team is taking the opportunity to get in on the fun.

Matt Reeves - The Batman

Warner Bros. has experienced a less-than-ideal pre-production process for The Batman. The buzz coming out of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, while mixed overall, pointed to Ben Affleck being the potential saving grace of the newly established DCEU — as not only an actor, but director as well. Though he’s since dropped out of the director’s spot, Affleck is still attached to star in and produce the film, as Matt Reeves has officially been brought on to direct.

Reeves’ involvement was far from a sure thing just a few days ago. While the initial reports pointed to a deal being all but a formality, as talks continued, Reeves and ...

Mind-Blowing Special Effects of Manchester By The Sea (Parody) #movienews

Casey Affleck and Lucas Hedges in Manchester by the Sea

Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester by the Sea succeeded brilliantly for a number of reasons — namely, Casey Affleck’s Oscar-winning performance. But even beyond Affleck, the film was packed with nuanced performances from three-dimensional characters working off of Lonergan’s script, which also won on Oscar night. The compelling work of Lucas Hedges and Michelle Williams also earned them Oscar nominations.

Lonergan’s stark, no-frills directorial style gave the characters breathing room and allowed them to really chew the scenery throughout Manchester by the Sea. But did you know that said scenery was actually “created” through the work of Manchester by the Sea’s brilliant special effects team? Ask the jokesters at Funny or Die and they’ll tell you that the film may have deserved an Oscar for the effects alone.

These topics are discussed in a new video Screen Rant produced in partnership with Regal Cinemas, which you can watch above.

Doctor Strange, like Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man before it, was seen as a potential risk for Marvel Studios prior to its release. For a film that’s been billed as Hugh Jackman’s last movie as Wolverine, that was to be expected, but it’s also fair to say that no one could have predicted just how blatantly excited both fans and critics are about Logan.

In case the film’s pitch-perfect trailers ...

Get Out Receives First Negative Review #movienews

Get Out (2017)

To say that the racially-charged horror/comedy Get Out has been a big success so far would be an understatement. The directorial debut of former Key & Peele star Jordan Peele, Get Out absolutely dominated the box office this past weekend, easily knocking The LEGO Batman Movie off of its two-week perch at #1 on the domestic charts. In the process, the film earned a healthy $30.5 million opening total, guaranteeing a big return on its relatively modest $4.5 million production budget.

One major factor that likely assisted Get Out in hauling so much cash was the film’s glowing critical reviews. Get Out managed to hang on to a perfect 100% fresh score on popular review ...

Alien: Covenant Red Band Trailer #2 Arriving This Week #movienews

Alien: Covenant cast photo with James Franco

Following the divisive reactions to 2012’s Prometheus, acclaimed director Ridley Scott is set to dip his toes back into the Alien universe once again with this year’s Alien: Covenant. Despite being a follow-up to Prometheus, though, Covenant already appears to have more in common with the first Alien film than it does any other installment in the franchise so far. Focusing on the crew of the colonization ship, The Covenant, the film follows them as they arrive on a previously uncharted planet that they initially believe to be a paradise in the universe. That is, until they learn that not everything is what it seems, as they come into contact with some of its unfathomable ...

The Conjuring 2 - Vera Farmiga

While Legendary is set to expand their Monsterverse with the upcoming Kong: Skull Island – which just released its final trailer – the studio has also been hard at work getting a sequel to the first installment in that universe underway with Godzilla: King of Monsters. Written and directed by Michael Dougherty, not a ton is known about the plot of Godzilla: King of Monsters though there are prevailing rumors that fans could get a little teaser in Kong: Skull Island. The sequel to the 2014 film Godzilla has officially cast Stranger Things’ Millie Bobby Brown in the lead role and,

Beauty and the Beast Clip: No One’s Slick as Gaston #movienews

Beauty and the Beast (2017) - Le Fou (Josh Gad) and Gaston (Luke Evans)

As Disney’s live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast creeps ever closer to its opening weekend more and more clips have been emerging. Many of the clips are from the live-action versions of the original animated film’s iconic musical numbers. That includes the opening sequence ‘Belle’, with Emma Watson strolling through the movie’s version of the French countryside, as well as Emma Thompson, as Mrs. Potts, singing the eponymous song.

Disney has now released another musical clip from the live-action version of Beauty and the Beast. The one is from the song ‘Gaston’ and largely focuses on  Josh Gad (Frozen) as Le Fou, singing his own verses from the larger musical number.

This ‘Gaston’ clip is the most audiences have seen out of Le Fou to date and Josh Gad’s Broadway experience (see Book of Mormon), really shines through in this clip – in everything from his voice to his over-the-top choreography. Luke Evans (The ...

Paramount Pictures continues to release promotional material for its upcoming Ghost in the Shell live-action feature film, adapted from the popular anime/mange series of the same name. Most of the film’s marketing continues to focus on Scarlett Johansson as the movie’s lead character – the Major – as do conversations about Johansson being cast in the role of a previously-Japanese character.

Paramount has now released a series of motion posters spotlighting not only the Major, but several other integral characters from Ghost in the Shell. There are eight motion posters in all, giving audiences a chance to preemptively get to know what is sure to be ...

Power Rangers TV Spot: Misfits Become Heroes #movienews

Power Rangers (2017) - Red Ranger without helmet

The latest iteration of the Power Rangers franchise is about to break onto silver scenes everywhere, with a little bit of help from Lionsgate. This is not the first time the popular franchise from Saban has been adapted into a feature-length film, although this is the first time that a Power Rangers movie will not tie directly with a Power Rangers TV series currently on the air.

Lionsgate dropped its first Power Rangers movie trailer last year, and now has less than 30 days to go until the movie opens in theaters. As part of the final marketing push for the film, a fresh TV spot (titled ‘Power’) for the big screen Power Rangers reboot has now been released online too.

This Power Rangers spot takes a different approach than some of its predecessors. Rather than highlighting the more fantastical elements and spectacle of the film (such as the Rangers’ fighting abilities and Zords), it instead focuses on the story at the heart ...

Alita: Battle Angel – Mahershala Ali Playing Two Roles #movienews

Over the next few years, the big blockbuster trend looks to be adapting hit anime and manga series into live-action movies. While some, like 2015’s Attack on Titan and the upcoming Fullmetal Alchemist will be Japanese productions, an increasing number of them are being made as American remakes. Attack on Titan will actually be one of them, as will next month’s Ghost in the Shell. From there, popular series like Naruto and Death Note will receive a similar treatment.

One adaptation with some big names attached is Alita: Battle Angel. Based on the manga Battle Angel Alita, the movie will be directed by Robert Rodriguez and produced by James Cameron. Telling the ...

Suicide Squad 2: Mel Gibson Directing ‘Not A Done Deal’ #movienews

Mel Gibson Suicide Squad 2

The phrase “Oscar-winner Suicide Squad” may seem surreal, but after last night, it’s true. While the film’s writing, directing, and acting weren’t praised, it did manage to impress the academy in the hair and makeup category. That success, no matter how seemingly marginal, will only help to fuel the film’s popularity. While it was hardly a hit with critics, and even the editor of the film acknowledged its flaws, the movie made back its budget and then some at the box office. And while fans of DC Comics were largely split, the movie has developed a vocal fan base of its own.

Still, the movie was a big enough money-maker for Warner Bros. that plans are not only moving forward on a sequel, but a spinoff focused on Harley Quinn and newcomers Poison Ivy and Catwoman is in the works titled Gotham City Sirens. For a time, ...

The LEGO Movie poster banner

While franchises have always been a popular draw for Hollywood studios, the success of superhero films and shared universes have made them the go-to model for blockbuster filmmaking. While comics and Star Wars may seem like obvious properties to build a series around, another subgenre has begun emerging: movies based on toys. Though the G.I. Joe franchise never really took off, Transformers is going strong, with a new entry in The Last Knight just on the horizon. From there, they’ll be spinning out side stories and trying to craft a shared continuity. Meanwhile, LEGO has emerged as a surprise entry into the ...

Marvel’s Luke Cage Account Responds to Mahershala Ali & Moonlight Wins #movienews

Cottonmouth Mahershala Ali

There were a few hiccups along the way but at the end of Oscar night, Barry Jenkins’ stirring coming-of-age drama Moonlight came out one of the biggest winners, garnering three awards including Best Picture (though Warren Beatty still isn’t sure about that). One of Moonlight‘s stars, Mahershala Ali, took home the award for Best Supporting Actor and a lot of viewers were left wondering, “Who is Mahershala Ali?”

As a matter of fact, Ali has been around for a long time doing mostly TV, so even people who didn’t know the name had likely seen him many times before the Oscars.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Trailer Teaser: Tomorrow, Get Ready #movienews

Marvel is all set for a spectacular year at the cinema. After debuting in Captain America: Civil War, Spidey will finally be getting his own solo film set in the MCU when Spider-Man: Homecoming premieres this summer. Following that, the Hulk will be joining the God of Thunder in space for the intergalactic roadtrip that will be Thor: Ragnarok. Before then, however, all eyes are on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the follow-up to Marvel’s massively successful cosmic romp.

We’ve learned a lot about the film so far, and recently got our best look yet at Kurt Russell’s version of Ego. We’ve also seen plenty of images from the film, found out that Rob Zombie will play a role, and learned how the relationship will play out between Star-Lord and his father. Most exciting of all, we’ve discovered that a full trailer for the film will finally be dropping tomorrow ...

If the hint proves to be true, Rooker would be joined by the majority of his GOTG pals including Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana and Karen Gillan, as well as Sean Gunn as Rocket who have all been confirmed as participating in the upcoming battle against Thanos.

Oscars 2017 Broadcast Ratings Dip Again #movienews

Oscars 2017 - Jimmy Kimmel

Last night, millions tuned in live to witness the 89th annual Academy Awards ceremony, more commonly referred to as simply The Oscars. As usual, the event was a star-studded affair, brimming with A-list talent from both in front of and behind the camera. First time host Jimmy Kimmel stepped up to the Oscars plate, and by most accounts did pretty well, despite his self-deprecating jokes about not being asked back. One particularly memorable bit even involved Kimmel surprising an unsuspecting group of tourists by bringing them into the actual ceremony.

Of course, the night was also not without controversy. A few of Kimmel’s more racially-charged jokes drew social media scoldings throughout the night, while some were turned ...
