J.J. Abrams successfully rebooted the long-standing sci-fi franchise in 2009 by heading back to the beginning to tell the story of how James Tiberius Kirk became captain of the Enterprise. While the first two movies were something of a big hitter for Paramount, Star Trek Beyond underperformed financially at the box office and cast an ongoing franchise into doubt.
