In a day and age when blockbusters from different cinematic universes and franchises dominate the box office, the summer season has continued to be extended. While it originally may be May through July/August, the summer movie season has been starting in March in recent years, and coming to a close in August or September. It was after this rush that smaller movies had a chance to break through and avoid the unwanted connotations that come with early year releases.
