Mean Girls - Santa Stage Number

In 2004, Tina Fey was a regular cast member of Saturday Night Live, mostly known as the co-anchor of ‘Weekend Update’ with Jimmy Fallon. It’s also the year she established herself as a skilled writer, with the release of the hit comedy Mean GirlsThe movie starred many SNL alumni in the supporting roles, including Tim Meadows, Ana Gasteyer, Amy Poehler, and Fey herself.

Directed by Mark Waters, Mean Girls is the story of naive teenager Cady (Lindsay Lohan) who attends High School for the first time after being home-schooled in Africa. She meets and befriends the most popular girls in school, known as The Plastics (Rachel McAdams, Lacey Chabert, and Amanda Seyfried) only to learn how truly mean they are. Cady decides ...

Rogue One & Sing to Top New Year Box Office Frame #movienews

Star Wars: Rogue One and Sing

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is already a huge success at the box office, even by Star Wars standards. The movie is poised to pass $400 domestically over New Year’s weekend, which is about $86 million away from the year-best total for Finding Dory – and it’s only in its third weekend in theaters. Rogue One doesn’t have enough time to reach the highest domestic total of the 2016 calendar year in the U.S., but has a chance to pass Captain America: Civil War ($408 million) for the second-highest.

While Rogue One is set to continue ruling the galaxy at the box office, it has some competition in Illumination ...

Shazam - Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam Fan Art by George Evangelista

Though both Suicide Squad and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice failed to impress critics and have split fans, the two films earned Warner Brothers an impressive amount of money this year. Thanks to that commercial success, the WB has shown no sign of slowing down with the rollout of their superhero universe. In the near future, that means the release of Wonder WomanJustice League, and Aquaman. After that, the DCEU will expand its roster further by giving a number of other heroes and villains their own films. Out of all of their upcoming projects, Shazam! is one of the biggest unknowns.

Originally announced as arriving in 2019, many have questioned whether this will actually be the case. For starters, no actor ...

Alien Covenant Ridley Scott

Ridley Scott is a director who is known for jumping from one genre to the next with amazing dexterity. Not only has Scott tackled just about every genre you can name, from sci-fi to horror to action to Biblical epics, he’s also mastered most of them while creating a handful of films that genuinely define their particular genre.

There is however one genre the legendary Scott has not yet tried to take on: superhero movies. Unless you count Gladiator as a superhero film, Scott has never gotten close to dipping his toe in that particular pool. Why exactly has Scott, a man who has the technical skill to handle pretty much anything you can throw at him, ...

Kong Skull Island - Tom Hiddleston as James Conrad

Peter Jackson’s 2005 remake of the classic King Kong is as much a love letter to the ‘golden age’ of cinema as it is a monster movie. He maintained the 1930’s setting of the original and created a bold, visual spectacle which often strayed into melodrama. This pastiche approach worked for Jackson, and in rebooting the franchise with Kong: Skull Island, Jordan Vogt-Roberts has taken a similar approach to the 1976 version of King Kong.

Footage from the movie revealed so far promises something different to what audiences have seen before, but marketing for the movie has made similar use of iconic imagery and music from another renowned decade. It draws obvious parallels to the Vietnam War and makes use ...

Super Mario Bros. Movie

Decades before Assassin’s Creed became the latest in a long line of video game movie flops, there was Super Mario Bros. Based on the massively popular franchise, the 1993 movie starred Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo as the titular heroes as they discover an ancient evil, an underground city, and their true destiny. With a budget of $48 million and a box office haul of only $20.9 million, the movie was a huge failure. Gaining a 15% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it failed to impress both critics and filmgoers.

Though not every adaptation of a video game has been a failure, the movie laid out many of the issues that would be faced by future attempts—like films for Double Dragon and Street Fighter, which both released to ...

Suicide Squad & Ghostbusters (2016) Are the Same Movie [Video] #movienews

Suicide Squad and Ghostbusters

2016 goes down as one of the most divisive years in recent memory. Not only was this felt during the election, but the drama spilled over into the world of cinema as well. Two of the year’s more divisive films were Suicide Squad and the reboot of GhostbustersSuicide Squad and its fellow DC Extended Universe movie Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice both wound up dividing critics, fans, and general audiences alike.

For Ghostbusters part, the controversy started well before it hit theaters. Part of this was due to it being a reboot of a beloved classic, but the other part came from the backlash against the film having all four of its leads be women. It was one of the darker episodes in a year full of sexist and/or racist incidents – which isn’t to say there’s no humor to be gained from either the actual Ghostbusters reboot or Suicide Squad.

It seems the divisiveness of the two ...

The Power Rangers reboot trailer: Dacre Montgomery as Jason Lee Scott, Naomi Scott as Kimberly Hart, RJ Cyler as Billy Cranston, Becky G as Trini Kwan, the Yellow Ranger, and Ludi Lin as Zack Taylor, the Black Ranger.

The premiere of the Power Rangers movie reboot is fast approaching, and though we’ve seen the first trailer (and an international version), there’s still a lot we don’t know about Saban’s upcoming take on the property.  We know that Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games) will play the villainous Rita Repulsa, and that she’ll be joined by a new approach to the henchman Goldar, but we still aren’t sure what their evil plot will be. At least we’ve had a few looks at the Rangers’ costumes and Zords, and we’re likely to get at least one more trailer before a slew of TV spots.

The movie will certainly have a lot of ground to cover introducing our primary heroes and villains – not to ...

Tyrus Wong, an artist at Disney studios and later at Warner Bros, has died at the age of 106. Deadline reports that Wong’s family confirmed the sad news on Facebook. Wong worked for Disney from 1938-41 and during that time made a key contribution to the creation of Bambi, creating art pieces that would ultimately form the basis for the film’s famously unique look. Darth Vader In Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

As Disney’s first Star Wars spinoff, it was only natural that Rogue One: A Star Wars story would introduce new corners of the universe for its original heroes to explore. But the film also significantly expanded the lore of at least one existing legend – Darth Vader. Though the Dark Lord of the Sith has very little screen time in the film, one noteworthy scene brings us to his previously unseen home on the volcanic planet of Mustafar.

We’ve already heard that Darth Vader’s castle may return in future Star Wars films. This makes sense, considering Kylo Ren’s obsession with his grandfather, but it also made it all the more important to get the design right.

Historically, Star Wars films have never been anything but massive box office success stories, but Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was a unique risk for Disney. Episode VII: The Force Awakens was a natural extension of the property, but this year’s spinoff film had to get by on the universe alone, with no classic returning characters in major roles. How well Rogue One did would be a sign of the vitality of releasing franchise entries on a yearly basis, as well as the potential of similar spinoff projects, like the upcoming Han Solo film.

Thanks to the success of Doctor Strange, it seems safe to assume that no Marvel Studios release will ever be a risky proposition. No matter how unknown the property, however, Marvel has always received a sizable return on their investment. In 2017 Besson is returning to sci-fi with the comic book adaptation Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets and hopes are high that the director can once again deliver a stylistic masterpiece that will be talked about for years.

Those that have seen the trailer for Valerian, especially the 3D edition, are likely already at least mildly intrigued by what the movie has to offer in terms of visuals. BB-8, Gonk droid, and Boba Fett in Star Wars fan film

Before the recent continuation of the Star Wars saga, Lucasfilm had a shoddy track record when it came to introducing non-human, comic relief characters to their sweeping sci-fi epics. While R2-D2 and C-3PO have long been fan favorites thanks to their odd couple persona and their inclusion in the original trilogy, the prequels couldn’t quite measure up when they introduced Jar Jar Binks. Widely considered one of the worst parts of the prequel trilogy (unless you’re a Darth Jar Jar truther), Binks was so hated during his debut in The Phantom Menace the his role was virtually eradicated in the next two films. The two latest Star Wars movies, however, have broken the curse.

Logan (2017) - Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) at the Liberty Motel

While there was recent speculation that Ryan Reynolds’ titular character from the mega hit comic adaptation Deadpool would appear in Hugh Jackman’s upcoming Logan film, Reynolds quickly shot down such rumors. The actor elaborated, claiming the character would not mix very well with the tone that director James Mangold was shooting for with Logan. Early reaction to footage seems to suggest that Reynolds is not wrong in his reasoning, describing a film that’s more akin to westerns than modern comic book blockbuster action films.

While it’s still entirely possible that fans will one day get that Wolverine and Deadpool team-up film, Logan is clearly not designed to be that film. Now, Mangold has revealed in great detail ...

Among a plethora of early additions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel Studios and Disney’s ability to nab Natalie Portman was one of the most impressive. Sure, they had cast other big name stars, but Portman would be riding high off her Oscar win from Black Swan by the time Thor hit theaters. Her role as Jane Foster however did not receive the reception that all parties involved had hoped for. This is not because of Portman’s performance, but instead due to Jane’s role largely being to keep Thor on Earth.

Illegal downloading of movies and TV shows remains a popular, though again illegal, activity in the modern age of the Internet. Piracy was still a huge problem in 2016 and as you might expect, the most-pirated movies were all major studio titles and franchise installments, similar to how mega popular cable series like HBO’s Game of Thrones and Westworld were among 2016’s most pirated TV programs.

The biggest hit on pirate sites was also the movie that shook up the superhero genre the most, by injecting a dose of snarky humor into the formula. Not too far behind, however, was another comic books-based blockbuster that prompted much in the way of discussion amongst movie fans in 2016.

Arrival - Amy Adams on alien ship

In the midst of a successful, albeit relatively young career, Denis Villeneuve may have directed, arguably, his most critically successful endeavor in the form of this year’s sci-fi picture ArrivalArrival not only garnered rave reviews from its critics, it is also expected to receive several nominations at the upcoming Academy Awards – including Best Actress for its standout lead Amy Adams, as well as a nod from the highly-coveted Best Picture category, among others.

Perhaps where this feature shines the brightest, however, is in its tightly-written script. Screenwriter Eric Heisserer worked extremely hard, and for several years, to bring Ted Chiang’s short story to the big screen; with the end result being one of 2016’s finest pictures. That said, it would appear that Arrival not only succeeds in delivering an entertaining story to moviegoing audiences but a scientifically accurate one as well.

One year after scoring a massive R-rated comic book hit with Deadpool, 20th Century Fox is hoping to replicate that success with the R-rated Logan, allegedly Hugh Jackman’s final turn as Wolverine. While the two projects share the same MPAA classification, they could not be more different in terms of tone and approach. One is a Golden Globe nominated comedy that took pleasure in pop culture references and shattering the fourth wall, while the other is a contemplative character drama modeled after gritty Westerns. This is why it was such a surprise earlier this week when it was reported that Ryan Reynolds had shot a scene as the Merc With a Mouth for Logan.

Aquaman Stunt Team Preparing for Underwater Sequences #movienews

Justice League (2017) - Jason Momoa as Aquaman

Although he has plenty of fans within the comic book community and many a writer and artist have strived to give him compelling stories that involve more than swimming around underwater and talking to fish, Aquaman has, on occasion, had a difficult time being accepted as a character as cool as Batman or as iconic as Superman. While that may have something to do with his penchant for wearing an orange and green costume with scales on it, the character has been given a cinematic makeover thanks to a brief appearance in Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice that will be followed up by a role in the recently wrapped Justice League, and finally, his own solo film ...

New Rogue One & Star Wars Rebels Connection Potentially Revealed #movienews

Star Wars - Rogue One and Rebels

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story just can’t seem to stay out of the news. Despite being the second Star Wars film in the past year, the movie is garnering buzz to rival its predecessor The Force Awakens. All that positive word of mouth has helped the film inch towards a $700 million global box office haul, with that number continuing to grow as the movie is only in its second week of release. On top of that, the film has yet to open in China, sure to push its worldwide total past $1 billion. All in all, the commercial and critical success has proven that Disney and Lucasfilm’s gamble on the standalone story was a smart decision.

For a standalone ...

Ryan Reynolds Explains Why Deadpool Won’t Cameo in Logan #movienews

Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool for GQ

Ever since Fox’s Deadpool became a massive success, fans have wondered whether or not they’d ever see Ryan Reynolds’ Merc with a Mouth interact onscreen with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine before the latter gave his last performance as the character in next year’s Logan. Which is why yesterday, when a report claiming Reynolds had filmed a cameo end-credits scene for Logan as Deadpool, it generated plenty of buzz and excitement across the internet.

However, that enthusiasm was quickly diminished when both Reynolds and Logan director James Mangold took to Twitter to deny the news, saying there would be no scene featuring Deadpool in the film. To his credit, Mangold even spent several hours on the platform, explaining why the report was false, and why Deadpool, even despite loving the ...

Rogue One to Top $700 Million by End of Second Week #movienews

Star-Wars-Rogue-One-banner-excerpt

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story always had a lot to live up to. Not only was it the latest edition in the long line of Star Wars films, but it’s the first to exist outside of the classic Skywalker Saga. Though the film has many connections to A New Hope and the rest of the existing Star Wars universe, its position as a standalone made for Lucasfilm’s riskiest proposition yet. After the massive success of last year’s The Force Awakens, expectations and worries for the new film were at an all time high.

Over the past two weeks, fans the world over have breathed a collective sigh of relief as the film premiered to rapturous approval from ...

Wonder Woman Explores WWI With New Image & Details #movienews

Gal Gadot as Diana Prince in Wonder Woman

The inclusion of Wonder Woman was one of the highlights of Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice. Her no-nonsense manner and physical role in the film’s third act made her as entertaining a presence as either of the titular superheroes. It’s no surprise, then, that Wonder Woman is the next DC superhero to receive the cinematic solo treatment.

Directed by Patty Jenkins, the film will see the Amazon princess leaving her home island of Themyscira, to put an end to the ongoing horrors of World War I. Creating a superhero movie that’s also a period drama set against the backdrop of a large-scale war gives Wonder Woman a distinction many of her superhero contemporaries lack. And that historical drama is precisely what Jenkins is hoping to ...

How Much Money Will Assassin’s Creed Movie Lose? #movienews

Michael Fassbender in Assassin's Creed

Assassin’s Creed started off as a promising project. The film sported an experienced creative team behind it — including stars Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, and director Justin Kurzel (Macbeth). The talent was also helped by Ubisoft Studios’ major investment in the film, giving it an even greater chance for success. Yet somehow, the film is shaping up to be one of the year’s biggest flops.

Based off the bestselling video game series, Assassin’s Creed follows Callum Lynch, who uses a device called the Animus to explore the memories of his 15th century ancestor Aguilar — who was, as the film’s title would suggest, an assassin. The concept is ideal for cinematic adaptation and, at first, general audiences seemed to think likewise. However, the film’s financial result suggests video game adaptations will ...

Star Wars: Rogue One Darth Vader Scene Gets LEGO Remake #movienews

Darth Vader in Rogue One A Star Wars Story

WARNING: This post contains SPOILERS for Rogue One

One of the more anticipated aspects of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was the big screen return of famed villain Darth Vader. Lucasfilm smartly downplayed the Sith Lord’s involvement in the spinoff in marketing, offering only slight glimpses of the iconic character in trailers and TV spots. It was never expected Vader would play a major role in the narrative (with Director Krennic being the main antagonist, essentially), but Kathleen Kennedy did promise that Vader would loom large over the proceedings. In the finished product, the dark lord appeared in two scenes: a conversation with Krennic on the planet Mustafar and one action sequence that became an instant part of Star Wars lore.

Director Gareth Edwards saved the best Vader for last. Towards the end of Rogue One‘s third act, Vader is hunting ...

La La Land Director & Ryan Gosling Reunite for Neil Armstrong Biopic #movienews

Neil Armstrong

So far this year, there have been several box office surprises. For the most part, these surprises came in the form of films that were expected to dominate in one way or another, only to end up not quite hitting their mark. On the other hand, 2016 had a decent amount of small films that ended up surprising audiences and critics alike. Titles like Manchester By the Sea, Moonlight and La La Land all managed to make enough noise to attract big amounts of attention.

In the case of La La Land, anyone who was a fan of writer/director Damien Chazelle’s 2014 Oscar winner Whiplash suspected he was worth keeping an eye on. ...

Beauty and the Beast Trailer - Belle and the Beast with horse

So far, the hype surrounding Disney’s upcoming, live-action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast has been nothing short of palpable, with both of the film’s trailers breaking records upon their release, and the reactions to the released footage having been largely positive. The film will be the first live-action adaptation that Disney has done that is also a full-blown musical like its animated predecessor. However, the film’s musical sequences and songs are also the elements that have been mostly left out of the movie’s trailers and marketing so far.

At the center of all of that too, is Emma Watson as Belle. An actress widely known for her work not only in the Harry Potter franchise, but ...

Spider-Man Camera

Fans of Marvel Comics characters worldwide have all heard of ubiquitous onetime “Chairman Emeritus” Stan Lee and are increasingly aware of Marvel Studios mastermind Kevin Feige, but the actual leader of the modern Marvel company is familiar to far fewer people. Isaac “Ike” Perlmutter, an Israeli-American billionaire, is the CEO of Marvel and one of the most intensely-secretive corporate bigwigs in the world – having never granted a single press interview and being photographed almost as rarely.

An immigrant from Israel to the United States, Perlmutter is reputed to have worked his way from entry-level salesman jobs in New York to important positions within Revco, Coleco and Remmington before joining fellow businessmen Avi Arad, Ron Perelman and Carl Icahn in taking over trouble Marvel Comics, ...

Film Critics Accused of Damaging Chinese Box Office With Bad Reviews #movienews

Film Critics Accused of Damaging Chinese Box Office With Bad Reviews #movienews

The Great Wall (2017) - Matt Damon

In recent years, the worldwide box office has arguably usurped the domestic marketplace in terms of importance. Even when a movie struggles to leave an impact in the U.S., it can still end up as a profitable endeavor for the distributor. A recent example of this is the video game adaptation Warcraft, which made a measly $47.2 million Stateside, but grossed $433.5 million globally – in large part due to a record-breaking run in China, where it made a whopping $220.8 million.

China in particular has become a hotbed for the film industry, and currently ranks as the second-largest market after only America. The territory averaged a growth of 30 percent annually for the past ...

Rogue One: Ben Mendelsohn Discusses Different Versions of the Film #movienews

Rogue One - Ben Mendelsohn as Orson Krennic

With only two weeks of theatrical release under its belt, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has already rocked the box office, situating itself within the top ten highest grossing films of 2016. Though this success is hardly surprising given the astronomical power the franchise has in America, it certainly is pleasant news for Disney and Lucasfilm – which will likely use the film’s success to greenlight more spin-offs after 2018’s Han Solo-centered prequel.

Since the first Star Wars film premiered in 1977, creating prequels that honor the original films is an involved process, to say the least. Viewers are already buzzing about Rogue One‘s semi-controversial employment of CGI, and the prequel is loaded with a ...

Alamo Drafthouse to Hold Lightsaber Vigils For Carrie Fisher #movienews

Carrie Fisher as Leia in Star Wars The Force Awakens

Carrie Fisher’s death two days ago has left her fans devastated. For those who want to honor the late actress, Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is offering quite a unique memorial at several locations.

Several different Alamo Drafthouse locations are screening Fisher’s movies, andnd some are offering Lightsaber Vigils, in honor of her most famous role as Princess/General Leia in the Star Wars franchise. Those who do not have lightsabers may bring glowsticks or flashlights – the goal is simply to “brighten the sky” in tribute to Fisher.

The first event has already past, as last night there were Lightsaber Vigils at the Alamo Drafthouse’s Texas locations (Austin, New Braunfels, Stone Oak, Park North, Westlakes, and Laredo). But ...

Wonder Woman movie poster courage theme

2017 is a big year for superhero comic book movie adaptations across the board, be they of the Marvel, DC or some other variety altogether. Marvel Studios is going to be releasing three movies in theaters in the same year for the first time – one of which, to be fair, is a Sony co-production (Spider-Man: Homecoming) – while DC Entertainment will be unveiling both the DC Extended Universe’s Wonder Woman solo movie and the first Justice League film, following the big screen debut of Gal Gadot as Diana Prince in this year’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.

The live-action Wonder Woman, as directed by Patty Jenkins (Monster) and co-written by DC Entertainment president Geoff Johns, is an event that ...

Star Wars Movies Pass James Bond Franchise At Box Office #movienews

Star Wars The Force Awakens poster

Ever since A New Hope first premiered in 1977, Star Wars has been a bona fide box office juggernaut and one of the most financially successful film series ever. Featuring spectacle tailor made for the big screen, memorable characters, and great storytelling, the franchise sports a cross-generational appeal that few other brands can rival. In the Golden Age of the superhero movie, Star Wars is perhaps the only thing that can draw crowds larger than the latest DC or Marvel film. There’s a reason why some thought it was a mistake for Sony and Fox to release Passengers and Assassin’s Creed over the holiday frame: they were going to be overshadowed by Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

The Disney ...
