Before the recent continuation of the Star Wars saga, Lucasfilm had a shoddy track record when it came to introducing non-human, comic relief characters to their sweeping sci-fi epics. While R2-D2 and C-3PO have long been fan favorites thanks to their odd couple persona and their inclusion in the original trilogy, the prequels couldn’t quite measure up when they introduced Jar Jar Binks. Widely considered one of the worst parts of the prequel trilogy (unless you’re a Darth Jar Jar truther), Binks was so hated during his debut in The Phantom Menace the his role was virtually eradicated in the next two films. The two latest Star Wars movies, however, have broken the curse.
