Historically, Star Wars films have never been anything but massive box office success stories, but Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was a unique risk for Disney. Episode VII: The Force Awakens was a natural extension of the property, but this year’s spinoff film had to get by on the universe alone, with no classic returning characters in major roles. How well Rogue One did would be a sign of the vitality of releasing franchise entries on a yearly basis, as well as the potential of similar spinoff projects, like the upcoming Han Solo film.
