Fairly or not, the idea that having too many villains in one film can spell doom for superhero movies has taken hold as a fandom truism. This has been cited as a reason for the breakdown of everything from the 1990s Batman movies (with Batman & Robin) to Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 – and, to a lesser degree, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, back in 2014. Of course, that’s not actually a tried and true rule for the comic book movie genre.
