Instead of getting the biggest names in Hollywood, Marvel’s recent trend when hiring directors has been to choose up-and-comers who can fit their style within the MCU. The studio has so far found success doing so with the Russo brothers and James Gunn being turned into some of the biggest names as a result. Phase 3 will further push this idea by hiring directors such as Jon Watts with Spider-Man: Homecoming, as well as Taika Waititi for Thor: Ragnarok. The Thor franchise has struggled to find its identity outside of showcasing Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Loki (Tom Hiddleston) in substantial roles.
