Spider-Man: Homecoming‘s director is excited to see Sony’s planned Venom standalone film. The original announcement of the Venom film last year came as a legitimate shock to many Spider-Man fans too, since it had come just a few months ahead of Captain America: Civil War‘s theatrical release, where Tom Holland would be making his debut as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So when it looked like the Spider-Man character would be starting over completely again, in a new Marvel Studios-led era, the announcement that the Venom film was still alive and in development at Sony led to a lot of head-scratching amongst the comic book fan community.
