Deadpool may have been one of 2016’s biggest blockbusters, but it had a rocky path to the big screen. The film is based on the Marvel character of the same name, a foul-mouthed, anarchic anti-hero created by Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza in 1991. Deadpool, however, didn’t quite fit the mold set forth in previously successful superhero flicks, and the team behind it had to fight for over a decade to get it made.
When it finally premiered last February, it unexpectedly smashed any studio expectations, garnering widespread praise and raking in over $782 million worldwide. It also landed a much-anticipated sequel shortly after its release, ostensibly setting it on the path to a franchise.
